Steinway & Sons is a piano manufacturing company founded in 1853 in New York by German immigrant Heinrich "Henry" Engelhard Steinway (Steinway is the English adaptation of the name Steinweg).
The company was founded in 1853, in a lot of Varick Street Manhattan. Henry made his first piano in the kitchen of his home in Germany. By the time Henry established Steinway & Sons, had already made 482 pianos. The first produced by the company, number 483, was sold to a family of New York in U $ S 500.
Today, this piano is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.Durante the next 40 years, Henry and his sons, Henry Jr. Albert, CF Theodore, William and Charles, developed the modern piano. Almost half of the 125 patents of the company were developed during that period. Many of these inventions of the late nineteenth century, were based on emerging scientific research, which included the acoustic theory, the physicist Hermann von Helmholtz renewal.
Steinway's revolutionary designs and superior workmanship began receiving national recognition almost immediately. Beginning 1855, Steinway pianos received gold medals in many exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. The company gained international recognition in 1867, in Exhibit of Paris, when he was awarded the "Grand Gold Medal of Honor" for excellence in manufacturing and engineering. It was the first U.S. company to receive such a medal.
